MINDFUL: a better future for children’s mental heatlh

WITH YOUR HELP WE CAN FILL IT –

www.mindfulcharity.ca

How you’ll be helping

Your donation will make a life-changing impact on children and families coping with mental illness. Mindful will create an information-rich website that allows families to learn about their support options and connect with health professionals. We will organize events to educate the public to this critical yet often overlooked issue. Your donation will also fund our ongoing efforts to provide physicians with access to these proven methods and prevention resources

What is Mindful?

Our mission is to create a welcoming and inclusive organization where parents and children can find answers and guidance to navigate mental health issues. We will provide much needed education regarding the Orthomolecular approach to improving children’s mental health. Additionally, we will help connect families with credible and proven treatment options.

Where do we come from?

We are supported by the International Schizophrenia Foundation (ISF), www.orthomed.org and over 40 years of research and clinical practice in Orthomolecular Medicine pioneered by Dr. Abram Hoffer, MD PhD. This therapy encourages the careful management of nutrition, diet and lifestyle in order to correct underlying chemical imbalances and promote improvement of these conditions.

A Case for Supporting Children’s Mental Health

From ADHD and depression, to anxiety and schizophrenia, mental illness affects as many as one in every five youth, making it the single most disabling group of disorders worldwide. More often than not, medical professionals, trained in pharmacology and not complementary treatments, diagnose and prescribe psychotropic drugs for children as a standard approach to mental health treatment without first considering factors like diet, nutrition, allergies and exercise. While medication can offer relief from symptoms, it can also cause troubling side-effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, even increased risk of suicide and addiction.

Overwhelmed and frustrated by the gap in the treatment of children’s mental health, health providers, and patients and their families are demanding new perspectives and practices.

For more than 40 years, the International Schizophrenia Foundation (ISF), www.orthomed.org  has promoted the wide acceptance and use of vitamins and other nutrients to reduce the symptoms of mental illness, and enhance the efficacy of prescription medication while reducing its side-effects. “Orthomolecular medicine” is increasingly recognized as a safe, effective and viable alternative or complement to medication for preventing and treating mental illness. As part of a bold plan to transform children’s mental health in Canada, the United States, Japan and around the world, ISF is launching Mindful, an education network to connect parents with current information on the role of diet, nutrition and lifestyle in children’s mental health, and with practitioners who include orthomolecular medicine in their treatment approaches. Mindful will feature:

-A comprehensive website and online resource for facts and research about orthomolecular medicine overseen by Mindful’s Medical Advisory Board;

-A selection of accredited continuing medical education courses (CME) and conferences designed to provide physicians with the knowledge and tools to access proven methods and prevention resources; and

-Public awareness and education events on orthomolecular health.

To help plan, launch and maintain the education network over the next five years, ISF is unveiling the $1.5 million Mindful campaign, the largest fundraising effort in our more than 40-year history. With charitable support, ISF will launch Mindful in three phases beginning with the website this fall. Plans are underway to introduce the education program in 2013, followed later that same year by the public awareness initiative.

In time, Mindful will become the definitive resource for people looking beyond
medication for children’s mental illness prevention and treatment strategies.

We will educate parents and health providers; aid in informed decision-making; attract more health care providers to the field of orthomolecular medicine; and earn orthomolecular health a place as a first-line treatment option.
There is a gap in the treatment of children’s mental health today. With your help, we can fill it and ensure tomorrow’s children and their families have what it takes to treat and even prevent mental illness. Please give generously.
