Trained as a stress relief consultant, Rosalie taught stress management at the college level. Through all her workplace wellness and health promotion studies, she soon realized that stress reduction was her key interest.
Our mental and physical health suffers from causes of stress. While we can’t always avoid the reasons we experience stress, we can do something about its intensity, our perceptions of stress and, finally, how we handle it.
While Rosalie learned the ropes of stress management – personally and professionally, she also discovered that all people have similar reaction, some worse than others. It’s called the ‘stress response’.
The Top Five Biological Reactions to Stress:
- Release of sugar into the bloodstream to create more energy to fight off the stressor
- Increased cholesterol in the blood to create energy and take over when blood sugar levels drop
- Reduction in stress hormones which results in decreased libido
- Release of thyroid hormone (thyroxin) to speed up the body’s metabolism to burn fuel quickly, giving strength to fight or flee
- Decreased digestive activity, energy goes to the limbs for survival
All these reactions, if repeated on a daily (or sometimes hourly) basis in our fast-paced world, can cause anxiety and other mental and physical conditions. Even if a person is eating healthy foods and exercising, stress can diminish key nutrients in the body, leading to poor coping skills and stress related illnesses.
Through her work as a stress reduction consultant, Rosalie soon realized that lifestyle choices play a major role in the fight against stress. Key lifestyle choices include: nutrition, exercise, sleep, relaxation techniques, making time for friends and social activities, work fulfillment, positive attitudes, searching for (and hopefully finding) meaning and purpose.
